Erbil, (Rn) – The source of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Region said that the import of fish from the provinces of Iraq, Iran and Turkey cost the region billions of Iraqi dinars annually.

The Director of Fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture Government of the Territory Sirwan Saeed told the Kurdish news agency (Rn), that “the import of fish from the provinces of Iraq, Iran and Turkey cost the region billions of Iraqi dinars a year,” he said, adding that “the ministry is currently two projects for the production of fish fingers, fish, small as it seeks to increase such projects in the region.”

He Said that “the fish in the region is not a wealth primarily to back imports was due to poor fish market in Kurdistan and the lack of interest in the past,” noting that “the size of the fish meat imported from Iran to the region in 2011 amounted to 5750 tons in addition to half that size was imported of Iraqi provinces as well as Turkey. ”

He added by saying that “the size of the domestic production of fish meat in the region of a year about a thousand tons,” adding that “according to research an American it is incumbent on per capita eat 16 kg of fish per year, while the rate of consumption per capita in the region of the thickness of a year one kilogram” .

A statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources Government of the Territory that the number of fish production projects in Kurdistan reach 293 projects have been implemented on an area of 638 thousand and 55 dunums of land, including 128 projects is off work.

Baghdad’s version of a wax museum features figures who depict Iraq’s past, rather than replicas of celebrities like Michael Jackson, offering a distinctly different experience from Madame Tussauds.

Eschewing the Western model, Baghdadi Museum provides a window into a time before Saddam Hussein, the eight-year war with Iran, the invasion of Kuwait and subsequent sanctions, and the 2003 US-led invasion and its aftermath.

Sculpted works of wax and plaster depict scenes of Iraq from about a century ago, with women standing in balconies, men in barber shops, and artists hard at work.

Other exhibits show Sufi ceremonies or marriages, and women in Turkish baths — all carefully recreated in the museum, located inside an elegant Ottoman-era house.

Formerly an archaeological museum founded by British adventurer Gertrude Bell, the building lies in Baghdad’s old Baab al-Muadham area near the banks of the river Tigris.

The museum has more than 500 figurines, which were fabricated there. Sets, lighting and costumes are neat, the street scenes are clean and well-lit, and there are no weapons in evidence.

This contrasts sharply with Baghdad today, which is marked by high concrete walls to guard against explosions, pothole-riven streets, and numerous checkpoints manned by assault rifle-armed members of the security forces.

Iraq is still recovering from decades of war, sanctions and dictatorship, and a number of children and young adults have missed the opportunity to learn about the lifestyles of their ancestors.

Baghdadi Museum aims to fill this gap, and occasionally uses storytellers and musicians to convey the message.

Sina Mohammed, the director of a school in Baghdad, accompanied a group of some 75 joyous children all around six years old.

This “is important for the children, both for them to have fun, and to learn their history,” Mohammed said.

This is also the view of 32-year-old Riad Khamis, who came to the museum with his family from a nearby town.

“I am with them (here) as my father was with me. One day, my children will also bring theirs,” he said, gesturing to his two children.

The idea is to promote a message of “peace, love and culture,” the museum’s director Bassem al-Anizi said.

“It is good to preserve Iraqi culture in a world that has become a small village.

“Iraqi children desperately need to be educated about the past,” he said.

Despite the similarities, the museum, which opened in 1971, was not inspired by the famous Madame Tussauds wax museum in London.

Rather, the mayor of Baghdad at the time had the idea during a visit to Tehran, Anizi said, and it was progressively developed up until the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.

The period following the fall of Baghdad in 2003 was difficult, Anizi said.

Barricaded in the museum with a dozen other employees, he had to fight off “gangs of looters” that ravaged both government buildings and museums in the capital.

The museum’s premises and collections have since been damaged by the explosion of three car bombs. The facility reopened in 2008, after having closed in 2003.

Today, Anizi is in search of a site to open a new branch that would hold figurines of 55 people who helped shape Iraq, including its first king, Faisal, and Gertrude Bell.

“We will begin the project as soon as we have a good site,” he said.

Asked if it might include dictator Saddam Hussein, who was executed in 2006, Anizi was diplomatic.

“It is possible to include all those who led Iraq, whether they were a tyrant like Saddam or someone as good as Faisal. We must let the people judge for themselves. Our job is to document history, not to write it.”

ZUG, Switzerland, (UPI) — A crude oil expansion project planned for Iraq would increase the country’s export potential by almost 2 million barrels per day, Foster Wheeler announced.

Foster Wheeler, an engineering company with headquarters in Switzerland, announced it took a “significant” step with a crude oil export expansion project in Iraq.

The company said its project, a joint effort with the country’s South Oil Co. and the Ministry of Oil, would increase the crude oil export capacity by 1.8 million barrels per day. The project, Foster Wheeler said, achieved its “first oil ready for start-up” milestone.

“Achievement of this milestone represents the start of the final commissioning activities leading to readiness of the facilities to load first oil cargo onto a tanker for export,” the company added.

The International Energy Agency in December estimated crude oil production from Iraq is on pace to reach an average of 4.36 million bpd by 2016.

SOC Director General Dheyaa Jafaar Hyjam said Foster Wheeler’s developments would position Iraq at “its rightful place as a world-class oil producer.”

An IEA report, however, warns of growing political instability could dampen oil expectations in Iraq now that U.S. military forces have formally ended their mission there.

BASRA, (AKnews) – Iraq has opened a new crude oil terminal in Basra that aims to increase the province’s export capacity by about 300,000 barrels per day.

Reuters quoted chairman of the Iraqi Southern Oil Company Diyaa Jafar saying that the country’s oil exports will increase by 300,000 barrels per day once exports begin from the terminal in the next 10 days. Exports currently stand at around 1.7m barrels per day and the terminal’s full capacity will be 900,000 barrels per day.

Spokesman for the oil ministry Assem Jihad said the new terminal, located about 60km off Iraq’s coast, is the first of five export facilities designed to increase oil exports to five million barrels per day. Iraq plans to expand export facilities in the south of the country at a cost of $1.3bn.

The second terminal is due to be launched in the next couple of months.

Basra province, 550km south of Baghdad, is the center of the oil industry in Iraq and includes two-thirds of oil reserves in the country.

The news follows claims from the governor of Basra that oil wealth in the province is a “curse” on the local population.

And added that “the trucks that are cleared include trucks multinational,” pointing out that “about 40% of the total trucks that come out every day from the Jordanian border to Iraq is a Jordanian trucks.”

He pointed out that “there are a number of trucks are still caught between the Jordanian borders of Iraq due to its commitment to the conditions established by the Iraqi side, especially regarding specifications and standards.”

He said, “the Iraqi side prevents the entry of some types of vegetables of Jordan to Iraq for non-compliance with the specifications and standards of Iraq, which made the importers are taking extra-legal measures for the introduction of vegetables Jordanian to Iraq through the development of table eggs ranks the front of the fridge and put vegetables last part of the fridge.”

The volume of trade exchange between Iraq and Jordan, two billion dollars, and aspires to Iraq to increase it to four billions of dollars.
