Iraq Begin Delivery of Rice, Harvest in Four Provinces

Baghdad, (Rn) – The Iraqi Ministry of Trade said it has started delivery of crop rice, farmers in the provinces of Najaf, Diwaniyah and Dhi Qar, Muthanna, unexpected production exceeded the current year of the crop from its predecessor, who scored 80 thousand tons.
The agriculture sector has suffered in Iraq over the decades of wars, sanctions and neglect and faced severe drought in 2009 and 2008, which severely affected the agricultural production.
The agriculture sector is the largest operator of labor in Iraq, but comes back with the oil sector of vital importance in terms of economic output.
Iraq is one of the largest importers of agricultural products in the world, particularly wheat and rice, the government is spending huge sums of their budget on food rations program to serve 60 per cent of Iraqis.
The Associate Director of the General Company for Grain Processing Jassim Mohammed Abbas, told the Kurdish news agency (Rn) that “the General Company for Grain Processing, opened the door for marketing crop rice, in four provinces of Najaf, Diwaniyah and Dhi Qar and Muthanna.”
“The country’s production of rice, conductor last season reached 80 thousand tons and it is hoped to record a rise in the current season.”
“The company did not specify the marketing period and made it open to buying all quantities of rice, crop farmers.”
Iraq and consumes 103 thousand tons per month of the button provided by the government through a contract with international companies specialized in the supply of rice to the country.
The former Iraqi government has launched a comprehensive initiative to promote the country’s agricultural reality in July 2007, sets a time limit of ten years to reach the stage of Iraq’s self-sufficiency in strategic crops.
The initiative includes, among other things, support the farmers with seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, land reclamation and ensure the purchase of production of strategic crops at market prices and control of animal diseases, agricultural and financial aid to farmers and farmers.
