The Iraqi Students and Scholars Association invite the public to attend the showings of several Iraqi-centered films this month.
ISSA, along with Phi Alpha Theta, presents Iraq Movies Month; a month where they will be showing films that depict Iraqi culture, history and struggle for freedom. Each Wednesday for the next three weeks, these films will offer the public a chance to learn about the Iraqi society.
Tonight’s movie is “Zaman.” The movie follows a man, Zaman, as he goes on a journey to find medicine for his sick wife. He encounters many obstacles, such as an imminent war, but relies on his love for his wife to strengthen him.
On March 27, ISSA will show its next feature, “Welcome.” This movie, released in 2009, has won many international awards. A young boy from Iraq travels across Europe in hopes to get to his girlfriend in England. Immigration laws force him into the decision to swim across the English Channel to get to his love. He begins to take swimming lessons from a Frenchman and the two become friends.
The last movie, “Ahlaam,” or “Dreams,” will be shown on April 3. This movie shows the lives of three Iraqi citizens who are caught in the aftermath of the American “Shock and Awe” campaign.
“We want to introduce the Middle East culture, the Iraq one in particular, to students on campus,” President of ISSA Faez Ahmed said.
Each movie is free for the public and will begin at 6 p.m. in 212 Classroom Building. Pizza and drinks will be served at each showing. There will also be a question and answer session following each movie. Michael Bracy and Farshid Jahanshahi, both of who specialize in Middle Eastern studies, will lead the discussions.
“I really want (students) to come and ask questions that they have in mind about the Middle East culture and Islam,” Ahmed said.
